Boron supplements in the UK: a small mineral with a big reputation

Boron turns up in almost every men's formula on the market, usually with very little explanation attached. Here is what it is, how much you probably already get, and what the evidence supports.

What boron is

Boron is a naturally occurring trace element. It is not classified as an essential nutrient in the UK, which means there is no official recommended intake and no Nutrient Reference Value to print on a label. That is not the same as saying it does nothing — it means the evidence base has not been judged sufficient to set a requirement.

Where you already get it

  • Avocados, raisins and dried apricots
  • Almonds, hazelnuts and peanuts
  • Pulses, particularly beans and lentils
  • Apples, pears and grapes
  • Coffee and wine, in small amounts

A diet built mainly around meat, dairy and refined carbohydrate tends to be lower in boron than one with plenty of fruit, nuts and pulses.

What the research covers

Boron research in humans is limited and mostly small-scale. Studies have looked at its role in mineral metabolism — how the body handles calcium, magnesium and vitamin D — and at bone and joint measures. A smaller body of work has examined hormone-related markers in men, including effects on sex hormone binding globulin. These are early findings, often in small groups, and should be read as interesting rather than conclusive.

Dosage and upper limits

Studies commonly use 3–10mg a day. The European Food Safety Authority has set a tolerable upper intake level of 10mg a day for adults from all sources combined, including food. UK supplements are generally formulated well within that. There is no benefit in stacking multiple boron products, and doing so risks pushing past the upper level.

Reading a boron label

  • Check the elemental amount. A label saying "sodium borate 10mg" is not the same as 10mg of boron. The elemental figure is the one that counts.
  • Check the form. Sodium borate and boron citrate are both common. There is no strong evidence that one is decisively superior.
  • Check what else you take. Multivitamins and joint formulas often already include boron.

Boron in Drivenol

Drivenol includes boron as sodium borate at a sensible daily level as part of a wider formula alongside Tongkat Ali, KSM-66 Ashwagandha and Epimedium extract. It is there to round out the blend, not as a stand-alone high dose. The elemental amount is on the label supplied with your order.
