What Tongkat Ali is

Tongkat Ali — also written Tongkat Ali, longjack, or by its Latin name Eurycoma longifolia — is a slender shrub native to Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam. The part used in supplements is the root, which has been prepared as a bitter decoction in traditional Malaysian practice for generations.

Modern supplements use a concentrated extract of that root rather than the raw powder. The compounds most often discussed are eurycomanone and a group of related quassinoids.

What the research actually looks at

Tongkat Ali is unusually well studied for a botanical, though the trials are mostly small. Published human work has examined hormonal markers, perceived stress, fatigue, exercise performance and aspects of male reproductive health. Some studies report changes on some measures; others do not. Reviews consistently note the small sample sizes and the variation in extract types between studies, which makes it difficult to generalise.

What this means for you: it is reasonable to be interested in Tongkat Ali, and unreasonable for anyone to promise you a specific result from it. In the UK, no food supplement may legally be sold with a claim to treat, prevent or cure a medical condition.

Typical dosage

Trials commonly use 200mg to 400mg per day of a standardised water-based root extract, taken in the morning. Some protocols run continuously for 4–12 weeks; others cycle. There is no evidence that dramatically higher doses produce proportionally better outcomes, and the bitterness alone puts most people off large amounts.

Follow the dose printed on the product you buy rather than a figure from a study using a different extract.

Side effects and who should avoid it

In studies, side effects are usually mild: restlessness, disturbed sleep when taken late, or mild digestive upset. Because it interacts with hormone-related pathways, Tongkat Ali is not appropriate for anyone under 18, for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or for people with hormone-sensitive conditions unless a doctor says otherwise. If you take prescription medication, particularly for blood pressure, diabetes or a heart condition, check with your GP or pharmacist first.

Heavy-metal contamination has historically been an issue with poorly sourced root material. Buy from a seller who can tell you where the raw material comes from and confirm that batches are tested.

How to read a UK Tongkat Ali label

• Latin name. Eurycoma longifolia should be printed. If it is not, ask why.
• Plant part. Root. Leaf and stem are cheaper and not what the research used.
• Extract ratio or standardisation. A figure such as 100:1, or standardisation to a named compound, tells you the material is concentrated in a defined way.
• Where it sits in the list. Ingredients are listed by weight. A "blend" with no individual amounts hides how little of anything you are getting.
• Country of dispatch. A UK-dispatched order means UK consumer rights and no customs surprises.
